The Godfather: Part II (1974)

Buy tickets
The Godfather Part II is an achievement as exceptional as the original it follows—many would even argue it surpasses it.
Unlike the first film, where Francis Ford Coppola had to fight for the budget (which originally forced the story into a contemporary setting)
and for the cast he envisioned, this time he was given complete creative freedom.
A particularly visionary move was the casting of the then-little-known Robert De Niro as the young Vito Corleone.
His performance achieves profound authenticity, further enhanced by the sensitive use of Sicilian dialect,
which replaces English in the early scenes of the film.

The Godfather Part II made history as the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
However, it didn't stop at just one Oscar. In this regard, the sequel actually surpassed the original, taking home a total of six statuettes.
The Academy honored the film for Best Director (an award that eluded Coppola on the first film in favor of Bob Fosse for Cabaret),
Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Score.
The music saw the return of the legendary Italian composer Nino Rota, who had been disqualified for the first film because he reused motifs from an earlier work. This time, he collaborated with the director’s father, Carmine Coppola. Finally, the film’s legacy was cemented by Robert De Niro,
who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
